Programme Notes:

Revelation is a dramatic work for string quartet, based on the text from Revelation, the last book of the Christian Bible. This book is one of the most controversial and difficult descriptions of apocalyptic events, with many diverse interpretations of the events described in the account. The severity and cataclysmic nature of the events is staggering. This work isolates one “apocalyptic sequence” - the sound of trumpets.

In the fast section, the tension of the triumph is intensified by irregular rhythmic attacks, foot stampings and various string techniques. Its structure attempts to present the apocalyptic events in a macroscopic perspective, instead of the seven trumpets as descripted in the bible. And the slow section depicts the tears after the triumphant calls and the climax in slow section symbolises the establishment of holy kingdom, which God wipes away every tear from our eyes.
